The best electric nail file for UK nail techs

An e-file is the single piece of kit that takes the most time out of a working day, and the one most likely to hurt your hand if you buy badly. Low vibration, steady torque under load and bits that actually fit matter far more than the headline RPM. Five electric nail files sold in the UK, compared.

The short answer

Our top pick is the Elegelli Cordless Professional Nail Drill at £193.00. It is the most motor for the money here: an 85 W brushless unit running from 0 to 45,000 RPM, the highest published power and speed on this page. It takes standard 2.35 mm (3/32 inch) bits and carries a two-year warranty. The GelBottle Portable E-File is second at £202.80: its three-year guarantee is the longest here and it publishes nearly 12 hours of battery life, so choose it if a longer guarantee matters more to you than motor power.

The GelBottle Inc Portable E-File product shot

The GelBottle Inc

Portable E-File

A cordless e-file reaching 35,000 RPM with a lightweight handpiece, forward and reverse at one click, and roughly 12 hours of battery from a charge. The three-year guarantee is the longest on this page and it is the single strongest reason to pick it, because the battery is the part that gives up first on any cordless machine. It takes standard 3/32 inch bits.

Why it is here

  • Three-year guarantee, the longest published here
  • Around 12 hours of battery life, the longest on this page
  • Low vibration and a light handpiece, sold for hard gel and builder gel removals
  • Standard bit fitting, so every bit in our drill bits comparison will fit

Take away

The short version

  • Elegelli offers the most motor for the money: 85 W brushless, 45,000 RPM, £193.00.
  • The GelBottle leads on warranty (three years) and battery life.
  • Check the bit shank before you buy. The nail industry standard is 3/32 inch, which is 2.35 mm.
  • Vibration and weight in the hand matter more than top speed. You will never use 45,000 RPM on a natural nail.

Who it is for

This page is for you if…

  • Nail techs doing several gel or acrylic removals a day.
  • Anyone trained in Russian manicure or working close to the cuticle.
  • Mobile techs who need a machine that works without a plug socket.

Buying guide

How to choose between electric nail files

Check the bit shank before anything else

The nail industry standard shank is 3/32 of an inch, which is 2.35 mm. Practically every professional bit sold in the UK is made to it. Check that the machine takes this size before you buy, because a drill you cannot fit bits to is an expensive paperweight.

Torque under load, not top speed

You will spend your working life between 5,000 and 20,000 RPM. What separates a good machine from a cheap one is whether it holds that speed when you lean the bit into a thick set of acrylic. Brushless motors are better at this and quieter with it, which is why every machine here that publishes a motor type is brushless or claims low vibration.

Corded, cordless and the three-year question

A cordless machine is the obvious choice if you travel, and the ones here publish eight to twelve hours of battery life, which covers a full day. The trade-off is the battery: it is the part that dies first, and a long warranty is the only real protection against that. One machine here carries three years, which is worth genuine money over the life of the tool.

FAQ

Electric nail files: questions we get asked

Will a nail drill damage the natural nail?

Not on its own. Damage comes from the wrong bit, too much speed, too much pressure or no training. Used with a light touch and the right grit, an e-file is gentler on the plate than aggressive hand filing, because you can see exactly what you are removing.

What speed should I be working at?

Low, for most of what you do. Cuticle work sits at the bottom of the range, surface refining in the middle, and bulk removal higher. Headline figures of 35,000 or 45,000 RPM are ceilings, not working speeds.

What bits do I need to start with?

A carbide barrel or tornado bit for bulk removal, a fine diamond or ceramic bit for the cuticle area, and a mandrel with sanding bands for general shaping. Three bits will cover most of a working day. We compare bits separately.

How is this ranking put together?

It is desk research, not a lab test. We compare what the brands publish, check the price and stock on UK retailers on a stated date, and apply the same criteria to every product on the page. No brand pays to appear here and none of our links is paid, which we set out in full on our transparency page.
