The best HEMA-free builder gel for UK nail techs

Builder gel sits on a client’s natural nail through months of infills, so it is the product where the formula matters most once a client starts to react. "HEMA-free" is easy to print on a label, so this page goes further: for each builder we checked what else the brand says it leaves out, and whether a published ingredients list or safety data sheet backs that up. Five HEMA-free builder gels sold in the UK, all of them free of TPO.

By The Nail Tech Guide editorial team. Prices and stock checked on UK retailers on 26 September 2026, VAT included.

The short answer

Our top pick is HONA TrueBuild at £22.20 for 20 ml, £1.11 per ml. HONA states it is free from HEMA, HPMA, IBOA, Di-HEMA and TPO, and it is the only builder here whose published ingredients list confirms all of that, with a safety data sheet as well. It cures in 60 seconds and all 24 shades were in stock, though you need a trade account to buy. The GelBottle BIAB™ TPO & HEMA Free is second, with the widest range and full disclosure of what it does contain, and Twenty Pro BUILD & BOOST is the value pick at £0.84 per ml on sale.

The ranking

The 5 best HEMA-free builder gels in the UK, ranked

#1 Best overall
HONA TrueBuild product shot

HONA

TrueBuild

A 20 ml builder in a bottle that HONA states is free from HEMA, HPMA, IBOA, Di-HEMA and TPO, and the full ingredients list on the product page backs that up: none of them appears, and neither does TPO-L. A safety data sheet is published as well. It cures in 60 seconds, or 99 on a low-heat setting, is self-levelling despite a thicker texture, and comes off by filing away most of the product and soaking the rest. £22.20 for 20 ml is £1.11 per ml, and there is a 25 ml pot at £24.00.

Why it is here

  • The only builder here whose published ingredients list shows no HEMA, HPMA, Di-HEMA, TPO or TPO-L
  • Full ingredients list and a safety data sheet both published
  • 24 bottle shades, all in stock when we checked, plus 20 shades in pots
  • 60-second cure, or 99 seconds on a low-heat setting
  • Shows 4.9 out of 5 from 16 reviews on the brand’s site

Watch out for: Sold to trade account holders only: you have to log in to buy · File-then-soak removal: file away 80 to 90 per cent, then soak for about ten minutes · Free delivery only over £75 before VAT, and returns within 14 days · The ingredients include isobornyl methacrylate. It is not the IBOA the brand excludes, but it is worth knowing if a client has a diagnosed acrylate allergy

#2 Widest shade range
The GelBottle Inc BIAB™ TPO & HEMA Free product shot

The GelBottle Inc

BIAB™ TPO & HEMA Free

The HEMA-free version of the builder gel that gave the UK the word BIAB, at £21.00 for 20 ml with VAT shown, or £1.05 per ml. The GelBottle publishes the full ingredients list and a safety data sheet, and they are candid: no HEMA and no TPO, but the formula uses HPMA and the alternative photoinitiator TPO-L. It is thin and soaks off, and the brand’s 2026 guide cures it for 99 seconds on its lamp’s low-heat mode. With 63 soft shades, 12 in a harder file-off version and 7 ml minis, it is by far the widest range here.

Why it is here

  • By far the widest HEMA-free range here: 63 soft shades, 12 hard shades and 7 ml minis
  • Full ingredients list and safety data sheet published, including what the formula does contain
  • Soak-off removal on the soft line, which keeps removals quick
  • The brand sells it for clients who are sensitive or allergic to HEMA

Watch out for: Contains HPMA and TPO-L, both disclosed. If a client reacts to HPMA, this is not the one · No clear shade in the soft 20 ml line: clear comes as a 7 ml mini at £10.50, or in the Hard and Fibre versions · Four of the 63 soft shades were out of stock on 26 September 2026 · No reviews shown for this line, and free delivery starts at £90

An 18 ml builder gel that Twenty Pro states is free from HEMA, Di-HEMA, HPMA and IBOA, with the full ingredients list and a safety data sheet on the product page. The ingredients show TPO-L rather than TPO, and TPO-free is stated in the site banner rather than on the product itself. It cures in 99 seconds on low heat, soaks off or infills, and is sold for overlays and short to medium extensions. It was on sale at £15.19 when we checked, £0.84 per ml, down from £18.99.

The Manicure Company

Zero Builder Gel™

The longest exclusion list here: The Manicure Company states Zero is free from HEMA, Di-HEMA, HPMA, TPO and IBOA, and sells it as hypoallergenic. No ingredients list is published, but the safety data sheet is, and it is consistent with the claim, naming TPO-L as the photoinitiator. It is self-levelling, cures in 60 seconds in the brand’s lamp, and is sold for overlays, longer enhancements and infills. The UK store price is £17.06 for 15 ml, £1.14 per ml.

Why it is here

The store’s base currency is the euro, and £17.06 is its UK store price

Take away

The short version

  • HONA leads because its ingredients list backs up every exclusion it claims.
  • "HEMA-free" is where the lists start, not where they end: two of the five use HPMA, and three use TPO-L instead of TPO.
  • Every builder here publishes an ingredients list or a safety data sheet; only HONA, The GelBottle and Twenty Pro publish both.
  • Removal varies: soak-off, file-off and file-then-soak are all on this page.

Who it is for

This page is for you if…

  • Nail techs with clients who have reacted to a gel service.
  • Anyone moving a builder gel menu to HEMA-free before a reaction happens.
  • Techs who want to check the ingredients themselves rather than take a label on trust.

Buying guide

How to choose between HEMA-free builder gels

HEMA-free is not allergy-free

HEMA-free means one of the methacrylates most often linked to gel allergies has been left out. It does not mean the gel contains no methacrylates: others, such as HPMA, Di-HEMA or isobornyl methacrylate, can also sensitise, and a client who already reacts to one may react to others. That is why this page ranks on what the ingredients list shows, not only on what the label says. For a client with a diagnosed allergy, the patch-test results from their dermatologist tell you what to avoid.

Reactions come from uncured gel on skin

Sensitisation builds up from uncured product touching skin, again and again: flooding the cuticle, wiping a brush on your finger, curing too briefly or under the wrong lamp. Builder gel goes on thicker than colour, so give each layer the full cure time the brand publishes and check that your lamp emits the wavelengths the gel needs. A HEMA-free builder lowers the risk; clean application does the rest.

TPO: what changed in 2026

TPO is a photoinitiator, the ingredient that starts the cure, and it has been classified as toxic for reproduction. Under the Cosmetic Products Regulation (Restriction of Chemical Substances) (Amendment and Transitional Provisions) Regulations 2026, products containing it can no longer be placed on the market in Great Britain from 15 August 2026, and cannot be sold at all from 14 February 2027. CTPA guidance, developed with Trading Standards, says professionals may keep using stock they already own. In Northern Ireland the EU ban has applied since 1 September 2025. TPO-free gels use an alternative photoinitiator instead, most often TPO-L.

FAQ

HEMA-free builder gels: questions we get asked

Is BIAB HEMA-free?

Only one version is sold as HEMA-free. The GelBottle sells BIAB™ TPO & HEMA Free, second on this page, alongside its original BIAB™. Check the name on the bottle, and the ingredients list on the brand’s page, before you tell a client a service is HEMA-free.

Is TPO banned in the UK?

In Great Britain, products containing TPO cannot be newly placed on the market from 15 August 2026 and cannot be sold from 14 February 2027. Professionals may keep using stock they already own, according to CTPA guidance developed with Trading Standards. In Northern Ireland, the EU ban has applied since 1 September 2025.

Why is a client reacting to a HEMA-free builder gel?

Usually for one of three reasons: they are allergic to another methacrylate in the formula, the gel is not fully cured, or product is touching skin. Compare the ingredients list with their patch-test results if they have them, check your lamp and cure time against the brand’s figures, and look hard at the cuticle line. If the reaction continues, stop the service and refer them to a GP or dermatologist.

Can I use a HEMA-free builder gel for extensions?

Some are sold for it. Twenty Pro sells BUILD & BOOST for short to medium extensions on tips or forms, HONA sells TrueBuild for sculpting and overlays, and The Manicure Company sells Zero for longer enhancements. For real length, a harder system is still the safer choice.

How is this ranking put together?

It is desk research, not a lab test. We compare what the brands publish, including their ingredients lists and safety data sheets, check the price and stock on UK retailers on a stated date, and apply the same criteria to every product on the page. No brand pays to appear here and none of our links is paid, which we set out in full on our transparency page.
