The best gel base coat for UK nail techs

Nothing on top of a bad base coat is going to last. This is the layer that decides whether a set comes back at three weeks looking clean or at ten days lifting at the sidewalls. Five gel base coats sold in the UK, compared on the things that actually change your retention.

The short answer

Our top pick is the Elegelli Classic Base Coat at £14.00 for 10 ml. It is self-levelling, cures in 60 seconds under LED, and is HEMA-free and TPO-free with the ingredients list and safety data sheet published on the product page, which none of the other base coats here do. If you want to drop the separate primer step, The GelBottle 2-in-1 Base Coat combines base and primer in one bottle.

  • Self-levelling, so it sits flat without flooding the cuticle

#2 Best for saving a step
The GelBottle Inc 2-In-1 Base Coat product shot

The GelBottle Inc

2-In-1 Base Coat

A base coat with the primer built in, so the prep step disappears entirely. The GelBottle rates the 20 ml bottle at roughly 75 sets and the 7 ml at about 25. The trade-off is that the prep protocol is fixed: the brand specifies pure acetone on the plate and says not to use a scrub-fresh or prep-and-wipe product, so it only works if you follow it exactly.

Why it is here

  • Base and primer in one bottle, which saves a step and a bottle on every set
  • Published yield: roughly 75 sets from 20 ml
  • Soaks off with acetone

Watch out for: Prescriptive prep: pure acetone only, no scrub-fresh or prep-and-wipe · The product page states neither HEMA nor TPO status · Free delivery on the brand’s own site starts at £90 including VAT

Halo Gel Polish Base Coat product shot

Halo

Gel Polish Base Coat

The workhorse base coat behind one of the most widely used gel polish systems in UK salons, in 15 ml and 8 ml bottles. It cures under both UV and LED and Halo quotes a 14-day chip-free manicure across the system. At £0.88 per ml it is the cheapest professional option on this page.

Why it is here

  • Cheapest professional option here at £0.88 per ml
  • Cures under both UV and LED
  • 8 ml bottle at £7.14 for a mobile kit or a second station
  • Matches a colour range of 229 shades from the same brand

Watch out for: No HEMA or TPO statement on the product page, unlike Halo’s own rubber base and primer · Pure Nails shows prices excluding VAT · Free UK mainland delivery needs a £65 ex-VAT order, and excludes rural Scotland

Why it is here

  • Cool-cure formula, useful on thin or sensitive plates
  • Sits inside a complete HEMA-free system rather than being a one-off product

  • Cures under both UV and LED
  • Sold with a matching top coat as a duo at £16.99

Take away

The short version

  • Elegelli is our first pick on formulation transparency and a 60-second LED cure.
  • The GelBottle 2-in-1 removes the primer step entirely, which is worth a minute per client.
  • Halo is the cheapest per ml of the professional options at £0.88.
  • Prep does at least as much work as the product: if you are lifting, look at your prep before you change base.

Who it is for

This page is for you if…

  • Nail techs troubleshooting lifting on particular clients.
  • Anyone who wants a base, colour and top coat that were formulated to work together.
  • Techs working on thin, peeling or oily nail plates.

Buying guide

How to choose between gel base coats

A base coat cannot rescue bad prep

Push back and remove the cuticle properly, mattify the whole plate including the sidewalls, remove every trace of dust and dehydrate. Do that and most base coats hold. Skip it and no base coat on this page will save you. If you are lifting on one specific client rather than across the board, the answer is almost always oil on the plate, not the product.

Base coat, rubber base or a 2-in-1

A standard base coat is a thin adhesion layer and nothing more. A rubber base is thicker and flexible, so it adds a little structure as well, and we compare those separately. A 2-in-1 folds the primer into the base, which saves a step but means you follow the brand’s prep protocol exactly, including which cleanser you use.

FAQ

Gel base coats: questions we get asked

Do I still need a primer over a base coat?

On healthy, well-prepped nails, usually not. Primer earns its place on oily plates, on clients who lift no matter what, and before harder systems. One product here, The GelBottle 2-in-1, has the primer built in and is designed to be used without a separate one.

Why is my base coat lifting at the cuticle?

Almost always product touching the skin, or cuticle left on the plate. Both give the gel something to peel away from. Flooding the cuticle line is the single most common cause of lifting in the first week.

Can I wear a base coat on its own?

Yes, and plenty of clients like it. A clear base cured on its own gives a tidy, natural finish with a bit of protection, which suits clients between full sets or anyone who wants something very discreet.

How is this ranking put together?

It is desk research, not a lab test. We compare what the brands publish, check the price and stock on UK retailers on a stated date, and apply the same criteria to every product on the page. No brand pays to appear here and none of our links is paid, which we set out in full on our transparency page.
